One of the theme’s this month is “The Forest in Winter.”

We often find pinecones on the ground in this season.

What will happen if we put one pinecone in cold water and one in hot water?

The class brainstormed about what they thought would happen.

Each student wrote down their hypothesis using the “I think ___ will ___” and “If ___ then ___ ” formats.

Then it was time to pour in the water.

At first, nothing happened.

Students used a booklet to learn more about how forests differ during the winter.

They learned about how deciduous trees lose their leaves, but coniferous trees don’t lose their needles.

Ten minutes later, it was time to see how our pinecones had turned out.

Something had changed in both pinecones that were submerged in water.

The pinecone closed up.

We talked about why as students documented what had happened.

Pinecones close up their chells to protect the seeds that are inside.

When it is dry and sunny again, they will open back up to let seeds fall out.

Pinecones are truly amazing.
