What are staple foods?

Foods that are the main food eaten by a group of people are a staple food.

In Japan, the staple food is rice.

Where is the wheat that is used to make bread a staple food?

How about the cacao that is used to make chocolate?

It was time to take a closer look at the rice we eat.

Students were surprised to see rice in its original form.

They pulled the pieces off the stalks one by one.

Then it was time to break the shells open and find the grains of rice.

Students carefully rubbed each grain with a smooth stone.

They learned that it was important to not press too hard.

Back and forth they rubbed until a piece of brown rice popped out.

Students also continued adding to their Food Chart.

Next week they will finish it off with the final two food groups.
