In our ACCESS class, excitement filled the air as students geared up for Setsubun, a Japanese festival signaling the end of winter.

The first task on their agenda: crafting origami boxes that would soon hold the promise of luck and positivity.

Then they filled their boxes with soybeans and courage, the students faced a fearsome ogre during Setsubun.

Shouting “Monster, monster, go away, come again another day,” they joyfully threw beans to fend off the intruder.

The mix of cheers, giggles, and a touch of scary fun created a classroom spectacle, reminding everyone that Setsubun is not just about bean-throwing; it’s a symbolic act of pushing away bad luck and embracing the promise of good fortune.

In those moments, creativity and a handful of beans transformed an ordinary day into an adventure of tradition, courage, and the anticipation of better days ahead.
